10-year-old girl saves man by giving CPR

A story about a 10-year-old girl in Seoul has gone viral after she saved a man’s life by giving him cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which she had learned only three hours earlier.

On Monday, Gangseo Fire Station in southwestern Seoul awarded Lee Soo-bin for her bravery last Thursday when she saved the unconscious man in his 50s after he suffered a heart attack at an apartment complex in the district.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital by the emergency crew, but was able to return home the day after.

“It was around 7:04 p.m. when we got to the scene, and the man sat up on the road breathing,” said a fire station official. “We saw the girl nearby and heard people saying that the girl had saved him.”

The emergency crew received a call at 7 p.m. about an unconscious man lying in the road.

The girl and her mother received CPR training at Gangseo Fire Station only three hours prior to the incident.

Lee explained to the emergency crew that she pressed the man’s chest 30 times per minute until she heard him choking and breathing again.

“I was scared but just wanted to help him out,” she said. “Now I know CPR can really help people. I want to take my friends to the training.”

Studies have shown that immediate CPR can dramatically improve chances of survival. The fire station official said the survival rate is 97 percent if CPR is done within one minute.

The district fire stations launched CPR training for residents last August and almost 1,500 people have received the training so far, according to the official.
