41% of iPhone 6s smartphones have Samsung processors
SEOUL (Yonhap) — Around 41 percent of Apple Inc.’s latest iPhone 6s smartphones come with application processors (APs) produced by Samsung Electronics Co., the U.S. giant’s global rival in the smartphone industry, data showed Friday.
The South Korean giant was responsible for 41.04 percent of the AP chips in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, according to the data compiled by industry tracker MacRumors and based on a study on 2,500 iPhones.
AP chips, often referred to as the “brains” of mobile devices, play a key role in activating operating systems and applications of mobile devices.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world’s leading foundry chipmaker, was responsible for the remaining 48.96 percent, it added. TSMC is the world’s No. 3 chipmaker, next to Intel Corp. and Samsung.
By products, TSMC accounted for 78.27 percent of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6s, while Samsung took up 56.81 percent of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6s Plus.
“At this point in time, there is no evidence that the two chips perform differently, as more extensive testing must be done to determine any performance discrepancies,” MacRumors said.
“Though the chips are two different sizes, it’s highly unlikely there are going to be performance differences large enough to be noticeable during daily usage.”
