7 Korean films invited to Montreal fest

SEOUL (Yonhap) — Seven Korean films, including the Venice Biennale-acclaimed documentary, “Factory Complex,” have secured invitations to out-of-competition categories of this year’s Montreal World Film Festival, a local film council said Thursday.

According to the Korean Film Council, the six other films are “My Sister, the Pig Lady” by Jang Moon-il, “Su Saek” by Choi Seung-yeun, “Half” by Kim Se-yeon, “Our Last Summer” by Yang Chan-seok, “Taule” by Lee Eun-young and “It’s Really Kind of You” by So Jae-ick.

“Factory Complex” earned its director, Im Heung-soon, the prestigious Silver Lion award in the 56th International Art Exhibition, one of the main shows of the Venice Biennale, in May.

It marked the highest honor yet received by a Korean participant in the biennale’s 120-year history.

The documentary features the struggles of female workers in Korea and other Asian countries, including Vietnam and Cambodia. It also addressed the meaning of labor, revisiting South Korea’s iconic Guro factory complex of the 1960s and 70s.

The 39th edition of the Montreal festival is set to run in the Canadian city from Aug. 27-Sept. 7.
