11 injured in subway explosion near Seoul
(Yonhap) — Eleven people were injured Monday after a transformer exploded on a subway train in Gunpo, just south of Seoul.
The transformer, installed on the roof of the sixth car of the train, exploded around 6:56 p.m. KST as the train entered Geumjeong Station on Subway Line 4, causing the insulator next to it to also explode, officials of the train’s operator KORAIL said.
The blast sent fragments of the insulator flying, breaking some of the station’s windows. Pieces of the broken glass injured 11 people on the platform, police and fire officials said.
The wounded, including a 23-year-old man surnamed Kim, were taken to two nearby hospitals for treatment but most of them were found to have sustained minor scratches, they said.
The train was moved to a depot after all passengers were let off at Geumjeong.
“The main transformers needed for the train’s operation are found in three places at the bottom of the train, so the train that broke down could be moved to the depot using its own power,” a KORAIL official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
KORAIL and police officials said they were examining the train to determine the cause of the accident. Subway services on the same route were resumed around 7:21 p.m.
The accident marks the second time this month that people have been injured on the capital’s subway.
On May 2, more than 200 people sustained injuries after two subway trains collided in eastern Seoul.
