Korean American candidates make last ditch effort to win votes

With primary elections coming up on June 3, Korean Americans on the ballot are working harder than ever in the last days of their campaigns.

Michelle Park Steel, a Republican who is running for a seat on the 2nd District of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, is vying for the seat against three other candidates.

“This weekend, I’ll be going around five neighborhoods doing meet-and-greets, and on Monday and Tuesday, we’ll be doing phone banking,” Steel said.

Young Kim, another Korean American running in the election, said her campaign would focus on the November general elections, as she is running unopposed next Tuesday.

Kim, a Republican candidate for the State Assembly seat in the 65th District, said she’d like as many people as possible to participate in voting.

“We’re concentrating on doing phone canvassing for both Korean and non-Korean registered voters who have not yet voted,” she said.

Other candidates, including Peter Choi, a Democrat running for the State Senate in District 24, and Carol Kim, another Democrat going for the 6th District in the San Diego City Council, are also on the last days of their campaigns.

In Los Angeles County, Helen Kim, a prosecutor for the L.A. County District Attorney’s office, is looking to take the seat for Office No. 76 in the L.A. County Superior Court. She has sent out promotional materials through mail in an effort to bring in voters.
