Actors, singers and other entertainers were seen actively endorsing candidates during this year’s local election campaign. Some had family ties to the candidates, while others shared the political views of candidates.
Kim Han-gil, co-chair of the main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD), toured with his television star wife Choi Myung-gil, who was in Gwangju in support of NPAD mayoral candidate Yoon Jang-hyun.
Veteran singer Tae Jin-ah was also in Gwangju to support independent mayoral candidate Kang Woon-tae. During the campaign, Tae was frequently seen singing some of his hit songs with the lyrics changed to praise Kang.
Actress Yoon Se-in, whose birth name is Kim Ji-soo, was seen in Daegu the same day cheerleading her father, Kim Byun-kyum, who represents the NPAD in the city’s mayoral race.
Singer and football super-fan Kim Heung-guk has been vocal about his support of Chung Mong-joon, the former FIFA vice president who is representing the ruling Saenuri Party in the Seoul mayoral race.
