Tiger Woods barely makes British Open cut
HOYLAKE, England (AP) — Tiger Woods has shot one of his worst rounds at the British Open, a 5-over 77 that nearly cost him a chance to play this weekend.
Woods has failed to make the cut at a major only three times in his professional career, most recently at the 2011 PGA Championship. He was in danger again after a triple-bogey at the 17th hole pushed his score to 3 over for the tournament — outside the projected cut.
But Woods rallied with his first birdie of the day at the final hole, hitting a delicate chip over a bunker to set up a 6-foot putt. He rolled that one in, though there’s little chance of him challenging for his 15th major title.
He is 10 shots behind leader Rory McIlroy, who has a four shot cushion over Dustin Johnson.
Ahn Byung-hun (1-under 143) and Kevin Na (2-over 146) also made the cut, but K.J. Choi (3-over 147) and Y.E. Yang (7-over 151) were not as fortunate.
