6 killed, 5 injured on capsize of fishing boat
A fishing boat capsized in waters off Dadae Port in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, Tuesday, leaving six dead and five injured, the Coast Guard said.
Eleven crewmembers, including a 50-year-old captain, were aboard the 59-ton boat which capsized after hitting a towrope between a tugboat and a barge.
The accident took place at 4:32 p.m. in waters about 1.5 kilometers off the southern Geoje Island. The ship was bound to the island from Busan.
The weather was cloudy, but there were no high waves or strong winds at the time of the accident.
The exact cause of the collision is being investigated.
“We sent two patrol boats to the scene immediately after receiving a report. The boat was sinking when they arrived there,” a Coast Guard officer said.
The rescued people were undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.
