Conflicting statements plague Kim Hyun-joong assault case
Conflicting statements are plaguing the rising case of K-pop idol and actor Kim Hyun-joong, who was accused last week of assaulting his girlfriend in multiple instances since May.
Discrepancies between Kim and the woman who filed the assault complaint, identified as Choi, have arisen since the incident hit headlines last week.
Choi told Songpa police Wednesday that Kim had left bruises requiring hospital treatment all over her body in May and, in addition, a broken rib in July.
While Kim’s management company KeyEast released a statement Saturday denying allegations of repeated assault, Choi provided evidence of her relationship with Kim to Dispatch, a media outlet.
KeyEast stated that the two had known each other since 2012 but only started dating within the last few months, while Choi said she had been dating Kim since April 2012.
In text messages sent to Choi in 2013, Kim says, “Don’t break up with me,” “I love you,” “Do you want to live with me?”, Dispatch reported, along with photos of Kim hugging Choi in 2012 inside his Cheongdam-dong home.
The two also reportedly attended the wedding of Kim’s brother in August last year.
Perhaps most controversial is KeyEast’s statement, which reads: ”There was a serious argument between the two people, and it is true that they both engaged in a physical fight after emotions became tempered.”
Choi said it was a one-sided assault, not the result of both her and Kim engaging in the fight, and that the incident occurred after she told Kim she wanted to break up after hearing of other women in his life.
She provided evidence of the fight in the form of text messages sent between herself and Kim following the fight.
“My entire body is bruised…I’m in pain. I’m so upset that it came to this. I was beaten just to the point where it wouldn’t kill me. Why did I have to be hit like this,” she texted Kim in May.
He responded after performing in Japan, “I don’t know why I did that, when I would feel sorry after less than a day. I hope you recover from the bruises and the pain. I’m sincerely sorry.”
In its statement, KeyEast said allegations of regular assault over the course of two months were untrue, while Choi told police she had been assaulted twice since the initial May incident, on July 21 and at the end of July.
On July 21, Choi sustained a broken rib. KeyEast said in its statement that she had gotten the injury “not through a physical fight but while the two were messing around.”
Meanwhile, a representative of Kim’s told OSEN Monday that they would reveal the truth through a police investigation and that Kim would fully cooperate with the investigation once he returns from Thailand to resolve the incident as quickly as possible.
