FBI, Apple confirm investigation into celebrity nude photo leaks

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – The FBI confirmed today it is involved in the investigation into the posting of illegally obtained nude photos of celebrities on the Internet.

“The FBI is aware of the allegations concerning computer intrusions and the unlawful release of material involving high-profile individuals, and is addressing the matter,” FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said. “Any further comment would be inappropriate at this time.”

Nude photos of Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence, supermodel Kate Upton, singer Ariana Grande, actress Kirsten Dunst, actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead and others were leaked online by an unknown hacker in what appears to be one of the largest security breaches involving celebrities.

The illegally obtained photos were posted Sunday.

Apple Inc. said Monday it is “actively investigating” reports that the photos were stolen from its iCloud service. Apple did not say whether its service, or celebrity iCloud accounts, were breached.

“We take user privacy very seriously,” Apple spokeswoman Nat Kerris told the Los Angeles Times.

It remained unclear how the photos were obtained. Some celebrities involved in the hacking attack have called the photos fakes, but some have verified their authenticity.
