NY’s Korean Parade marches on despite rain
Even rain could not stop the 34th Korean Parade from its procession down Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan Saturday.
The event, hosted by the Korean American Association and overseen by The Korea Times New York, brought together 120 teams comprised of marching bands, local organizations, churches and Korean language schools for two hours of the city’s largest yearly celebration of Korean culture and tradition.
Joining in festivities were the Korean Traditional Music and Dance Institute, the Korean Traditional Music Association of the East Coast, a musical group from Promise Church, The Peace of Nong Ak Dan USA, the KCON poongmul team and a traditional dance team from Korean Community Services of Metropolitan New York.
A marketplace set up at 32nd St. in Koreatown offered a set of events, among them a K-pop performance and a singing contest, as well as good eats.
In attendance at the parade were New York Congresswoman Grace Meng, acting as grand marshal, New York State Assemblymen Ron Kim and Edward Braunstein, Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, New York City Councilmen Peter Koo and Paul Vallone, Jersey City Councilman Yoon Yeo-tae, Palisades Park City Councilman Lee Jong-chul and John Cahill, candidate for state attorney.
