Disney introduces Moana, its first Pacific Islander princess
November 4, 2014
Walt Disney Animation Studios announced a new animated film, “Moana,” which will include its first Pacific Islander princess in the company’s history.
The film will be directed by Ron Clements and John Musker who were both responsible for Disney classics such as “Aladdin” and “The Little Mermaid.”
The story follows a young teenager who journeys across the Pacific Ocean in “an action-packed voyage, encountering sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore,” according to Disney.
Disney has hired writer and comedian Taika Waititi, who has Maorian roots, to pen the script.
“Moana” is set for a 2016 release.
