Annual Korean spelling bee to open in Glendale

An annual Korean spelling bee is coming back to Glendale, Calif., for competing students studying the Korean language.

The Korean Institute of Southern California’s Glendale branch will hold its 6th annual competition inside Clark Magnet High School this Saturday at 10 a.m.

The spelling bee will have 65 students participating in elimination rounds.

Principal Kim Sook-young said the competition will take into account students’ skill levels and said the spelling bee is less about winning and more about having fun while learning the Korean language.

Ahn Ji-eun, a school administrator, said it’s not an easy thing for second-generation Korean American children to learn Korean. The hope is that, through preparing for the spelling bee, they can learn that much more, she said.
