January 13 officially Korean American Day in NYC
The vote is in: January 13 is officially Korean American Day in the city of New York.
The city council passed Resolution No. 417, introduced by Councilman Peter Koo in September, on Wednesday at a meeting.
The resolution proposed the celebration of the first Korean immigrants’ arrival in the U.S. in 1903, when the SS Gaelic — with 102 Koreans on board — arrived in Honolulu.
The Korean American Association of Queens and the Korean American Community Foundation are expected to put on an event with traditional Korean music and food on the newly designated day.
“I’m proud of the designation of an official Korean American Day in the city of New York, as it reflects the growing status of Korean Americans,” said Ryu Je-bong, president of the Queens association.
