EXO sweeps Seoul Music Awards
K-pop is still EXO’s world.
The 10-member K-pop boy band from SM Entertainment is sweeping music awards in South Korea and Asia, with the latest being three wins — including the grand prize — at the Seoul Music Awards Thursday.
The group, which released and promoted their third mini-album, “Overdose,” this year, received the honor inside Seoul’s Olympic Gymnastics Arena, Yonhap reported.
EXO-K, the Korean subunit of EXO, previously won grand prize in 2014 for the explosive hit that was “Growl.”
According to local media, the wins make EXO only the fifth pop act in Seoul Music Awards history to win grand prize two years in a row, after Seo Taiji and Boys (1992-3), H.O.T. (1997-8), Jo Sung-mo (1999-2000) and Girls’ Generation (2010-11).
It has been a good awards season for the group, with additional wins at the Golden Disk Awards, where they also took home the grand prize for the second year in a row, and at MAMA, where they received four wins including artist of the year, album of the year and song of the year with “Overdose.”
On Jan. 9, EXO was awarded “Best International Group” at the 14th Huading Awards in China.
Meanwhile, 1.2 million users reportedly flocked to buy tickets for the group’s upcoming concert, crashing ticket distribution site yes24.
