A play to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Korean independence, “Fading Away,” will open at House of Writers Art Hall at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Based on a documentary by Christopher Lee, the play premiered in South Korea’s Daehangno last year.

The Los Angeles production will be directed by Lee Jung-hwa and coordinated by Shin So-hee.

Lee said the project follows the life of a woman in four parts: as a six-year-old, a teenager, a mother in her 30s and as a 76-year-old grandmother. Through her life, she experiences changes in Korea from peace to Japanese colonization, to war to independence, to a modernized country.

Shin said the play draws on audience participation and features a mini-concert with a children’s chorus.

Jessica Yang, a second-generation Korean American actress who studied theater at UC Berkeley, will take the lead.

House of Writers Art Hall is located at 2410 James M. Wood Blvd. Admission is free. Ages 5 and older recommended. For more information, call 818-940-7830.
