‘Oldboy’ remake flops at box office

Spike Lee or not, the remake of the twisted Korean thriller “Oldboy” looks like it will become one of the biggest box office flops of the year.

With both “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and Disney’s “Frozen” shattering box office records, it turned out to be another huge Thanksgiving weekend for movies, but “Oldboy” was not part of it. With an estimated $110 million in North American sales from Wednesday through Sunday, the Hunger Games sequel posted the biggest haul on record for the period, topping the $82 million collected in 2001 by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Disney’s latest, “Frozen,” also earned $93 million in ticket sales over the recent holiday period, to take second place on the all-time Thanksgiving movie list (unadjusted for inflation).

However, Oldboy could not crack the $1 million mark and ended in 17th place. Even Josh Brolin and Samuel L. Jackson couldn’t save the movie, as it only made $1,458 per screen on its opening weekend.

The film’s budget was said to be over $30 million.
