Kang Jung-ho gets first MLB hit
(Yonhap) — South Korean infielder Kang Jung-ho picked up his first Major League Baseball (MLB) hit for the Pittsburgh Pirates against the Milwaukee Brewers on the road on Sunday, local time.
Kang hit a single up the middle off Brewers starter Kyle Lohse to lead off the top of the seventh at Miller Park. It was Kang’s first big league hit in seven at-bats.
He started the game at third base and batted seventh. He was 1-for-4 for the day. In his first two at-bats, Kang grounded out to third. Then in the ninth, he flied out to center. Kang is batting .125 in the young season.
The Pirates defeated the Brewers 10-2, thanks to a six-run outburst in the top of the ninth.
Kang is the first South Korean position player to jump from the domestic KBO League to the majors. He signed a four-year deal with the Pirates in January after playing for nine seasons in the KBO.
In 2014 for the Nexen Heroes, Kang belted 40 home runs, a single-season record for a shortstop in South Korea.
Kang had an up-and-down spring training in which he batted .200 with two home runs and five RBIs.
