UN chief gives 007 a special mission _ to eliminate mines
United Nation (AP) — Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Daniel Craig, who has won international acclaim portraying James Bond, as the first U.N. Global Advocate for the Elimination of Mines and Explosive Hazards.
And Ban has given Craig a special mission.
The United Nations chief said Tuesday he told Craig: “As 007, you have a license to kill. Today, we are giving you a license to save.”
“I am the eighth secretary-general, so I am 008,” Ban quipped. “This means I have given him that mandate to save.”
In a ceremony at U.N. headquarters, Ban thanked Craig for his commitment to support the U.N.’s vision for a world free from the threat of land mines and explosive remnants of war and expressed hope that he will raise support for the campaign to abolish them.
