Third diver in fatal abalone accident identified as Fort Lee resident

The unidentified man among three who died Sunday while diving for abalone near Caspar Beach in Mendocino County, Calif., as Aaron Kim of Fort Lee, New Jersey.

According to the New York Korean Consulate General and New Jersey police, efforts to locate and contact Kim’s mother are ongoing.

Kim, 53, Shin Hyun-suk, 49, and Oh Tae-won, 49, were visiting the beach on vacation with a group of friends when they decided to dive for abalone with two others.

Rocky waters trapped the divers in a narrow channel around 2:45 p.m., killing three. Two were rescued by authorities called in by a fisherman.

Kim and Shin were childhood friends.

San Francisco Consul Lee Dong-ryul said police and the New York consulate are having trouble finding Kim’s mother to deliver the news. He is known to have lived alone in Fort Lee.
