Samsung continues to increase lead over Apple with S6
By The Korea Times Los Angeles staff
Samsung Electronics can breathe a sigh of relief as it reviews its sales from the first quarter of 2015.
The South Korean tech giant beat out its primary competitor Apple for global smartphone market shares soon after the release of its latest flagship model, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.
Since release, Samsung has seen its lead widen and has grabbed 27.8 percent of smartphone sales between January and March. The figure is impressive considering that just before the new year, the company’s market shares were hovering around three percent, according to analytics firm TrendForce.
Analysts say it wasn’t just the S6 line that aided Samsung’s rebound. Sales from its latest entry-level models such as the Galaxy A, J and E series played a significant role.
The S6 is just starting to gain momentum and was released in China Friday, which should help boost those numbers even further.
The forecasts are a welcome sight for Samsung, which experienced a 1.96 trillion won ($1.8 billion) plunge in its 2014 fourth quarter operating profits.
