Koreans rank 5th among US Asian population

Koreans rank fifth among the U.S. Asian population with 1.76 million, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report released Wednesday in time for May, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

According to the report, Chinese Americans — including those of mixed race — came in at top with 4.34 million, followed by Filipino Americans (3.64 million), Indian Americans (3.46), Vietnamese Americans (1.9), Korean Americans and Japanese Americans (1.43).

The U.S. Asian population numbers 19.43 million, equaling 6 percent of the total population of 318 million, it said.

Fifteen percent of Asians — 6.13 million — in the country live in California. New York and Texas follow with 1.76 million and 1.3 million, respectively.

Among the Asian population, 51.3 percent over the age of 25 have bachelor’s degrees, and 21.6 percent have at least a master’s degree. The average for the entire U.S. population of the same age is 29.6 percent for bachelor’s and 11.2 percent for master’s.

As of last year, Asians had the highest average income of any subgroup at $72,472. They also had the highest Internet usage of any other race, with 89.9 percent of Asian homes connected.

The average age of the nation’s Asian population is 36.3 years.
