Boston Korean society gets new name, leader
The Boston Korean American community is off to a fresh start this month as its flagship association changes its name and brings in a new president.
The Korean Society of Boston, previously known as the Korean Society of New England, inducted its new president, Kim Kyung-won, Saturday.
Since 2005, the society had suffered a lack of a qualified leader and problems with the organization’s tax filings involving its status as a nonprofit.
Last month, Kim met with society directors Namgoong Yeon and Ahn Byung-hak to express his interest in the role. He was voted in 9 to 1 by a makeshift committee on April 29.
The society agreed Saturday to request status as a nonprofit under its new name.
Kim is a leader of the US Taekwondo Education Foundation.
