Mother’s Day celebrated across US by Korean American communities
By The Korea Times Los Angeles staff
Mother’s Day — and in some cases, Parents’ Day, which is celebrated May 8 in South Korea — was met with enthusiasm from Korean American communities all across the U.S. Sunday.
In Howard County, Maryland, the Korean Senior Center visited Lorien Nursing Home to entertain its seniors.
Center employees performed old favorites, played traditional Korean instruments and gave out rice cakes to about 50 Koreans there.
The Maui Korean Community Association in Hawaii held a lunch for seniors 62 and older by Korean language students. In the free lunch, students attached carnations — South Korea’s flower of choice for Parents’ Day — to attendees.
Young students in Los Angeles participated in an event celebrating their mothers on Friday with handmade flowers inside Lily Preschool & Kindergarten.
Northern California Korean Americans, too, joined the celebration.
A group of San Francisco organizations gathered to hold a festive lunch for about 150 people.
Meanwhile, East Bay Korean American Senior Service brought a karaoke machine to its lunch, attended by Consul General Han Dong-man.
Another lunch unfolded in Silicon Valley, where Korean American Community Services and San Jose’s Aksoo Association came together to provide a lunch for 180 grandmothers, mothers and daughters.
