SF Korean War memorial to begin construction in July
A San Francisco Korean War memorial will begin construction in July after five years of fundraising and planning.
The Korean War Memorial Foundation, which was founded to take on the project which will stand at the corner of Lincoln Blvd. and Sheridan Avenue in the Presidio, said Monday that a group of notable leaders would attend the starting ceremony July 11 at 10 a.m.
Among them will be Senator Dianne Feinstein, South Korean Assemblyman Kim Jung-hoon, former Secretary of State George Shultz, California Chief of Protocol Charlotte Mailliard Shultz, House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, Presidio Trust Executive Director Craig Middleton, former Congressman Pete McCloskey and Korean Consul General Han Dong-man, KWMF said.
The $5 million site, provided by the federal government, is situated adjacent to a national cemetery where 2,273 Korean War veterans are buried. The project had raised more than $2.2 million as of April 30 since 2013.
The South Korean government plans to add on another $1 million.
