N. Korea replaces old Pyongyang airport with one 6 times larger

North Korea finalized construction of a brand new airport in its capital of Pyongyang, which happens to be six times larger than the terminal it replaced according to the country’s main newspaper Rodong Sinmun.

The facilities will be open for travelers beginning on July 1 for both international and domestic flights.

Rodong Sinmun released photos of Kim Jong-un and his wife Ri Jol-su touring the airport and reported that he was content with how the project turned out.

The Korean Central News Agency reported that he had told workers he was “very satisfied to see the terminal well built in harmony with modern aesthetic taste and national character.”

The airport features lavish cafes and jewelry stores among many other retail shops.

North Korea recently revealed that it is going through one of its worst droughts in a century so it may be of some concern that a significant amount of capital seems to still be directed towards large construction and military investments.
