Antibiotic-resistant ‘superbug’ found again at California hospital

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — A Pasadena hospital says some patients have been infected with an antibiotic-resistant “superbug” that’s been linked to a widely used medical scope.

Huntington Memorial Hospital said Wednesday that several patients who had procedures using Olympus Corp. duodenoscopes were found to have the resistant pseudomonas bacteria.

The hospital has quarantined the devices and is trying to discover whether there’s a link to the infections.

The Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1J5p3pl ) says the problem was discovered in June and three patient infections have been reported to health officials.

Contamination of the reusable scopes has been linked to bacterial outbreaks that sickened dozens of patients in hospitals around the country.

A dozen infections were reported earlier this year at Cedars-Sinai and UCLA’s Ronald Reagan medical centers in Los Angeles. Three patients died.
