Woods shoots best round in 2 years with 6-under 64 at Wyndham
By Brian Han
Tiger Woods shot his best competitive round in two years on Thursday with a 6-under 64 at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C.
How did he do it?
He hit seven of 14 fairways so his tee shots weren’t particularly sharp. But when he did miss he didn’t miss by much, which allowed him to hit 14 of 18 greens in regulation. His average of 1.68 putts per green certainly helped as well.
Woods opened his round with a birdie chip-in after pulling his approach shot left and then bogeyed his second hole after finally reaching the green after four shots. His game seemed unpredictable, but he settled in immediately afterward.
The 39-year-old veteran went on to birdie six of his next 12 holes.
On the fourth, Woods stuffed a pitching wedge within three feet and it was smooth sailing from there.
It was his first time ever playing Sedgefield Country Club in a competitive setting, but the wet conditions helped players score a bit lower than usual.
“This is a tricky little course,” he told PGATour.com. “I felt really good out there. I felt the rhythm of the round.”
In order to secure a spot in the 2015 FedEx Cup Playoffs, Woods will need to win the tournament. He can still make it if he comes in solo second, but it will also depend on how the other players competing for a playoff berth will finish this week. Any other outcome means he will not advance.
