MLB’s first Asian American or female GM? Phillies scout Kim Ng
By Brian Han
With the Philadelphia Phillies finishing the 2015 regular season with the worst record (63-99) in baseball, the team might need some kind miracle to turn things around.
Kim Ng might be the answer they need. As it turns out, the Phillies are exploring that option and according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, she’s the front runner to become the franchise’s next general manager.
Except for the likes of Farhan Zaidi of the Los Angeles Dodgers and very few others, the role has been historically dominated by white males. To see an Asian American female assume the role would be significant steps towards bringing diversity to one of America’s oldest sports.
Though Ng has never held a position as general manager, she’s been involved with Major League Baseball since 1991 when she got hired full-time to work for the Chicago White Sox. She then became the youngest assistant GM when she was hired by the New York Yankees’ Brian Cashman at age 29.
She took the same role with the Los Angeles Dodgers and is now the Vice President of Baseball Operations for the MLB.
This isn’t the first time she has been seriously interviewed for the position. The Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners all expressed interest at one point, but fell just short of pulling the trigger.
If she does get hired, she will be the first female GM in the history of baseball.
