Five individuals died and two were injured after a fiery car crash that occurred on Saturday night in Groveland, Calif. just outside of Yosemite National Park.
California Highway Patrol officers were unable to determine how exactly the head-on collision came about.
“It’s one of the worst we’ve had in a while,” spokesman for the California Highway Patrol Nick Norton told reporters.
A 2012 Mercedes-Benz SUV and 2012 Nissan Maxima collided with each other around 6:30 p.m. on Highway 120 according to police reports.
A Korean woman in her 50s by the name of Yang Jeong-soo was the lone survivor from the Mercedes, which held five people in total. She was airlifted to the nearest hospital in Modesto with critical injuries.
Sasha Magana, 22, also survived with critical injuries and was airlifted to the same hospital. The driver of the Nissan Marcos Martinez died on the scene.
Because of the intensity of the fires, the police had trouble identifying the others involved in the accident.
