New York City high school juniors will have access to a free SAT exam every spring, Chancellor Carmen Farina announced Monday.

“The opportunity to go to college should never be decided by students’ backgrounds or zip codes,” Farina said, according to NYC Department of Education.

The SAT School Day — in partnership with College Board — is a part of a citywide program, which also includes College Application Week, to provide students with the support and opportunities they need to attend college.

College Application Week offers week-long activities helping students plan for and apply to higher education.

According to the department, the free SAT program will undergo a test with 15,000 students in 92 schools next year before going on to become available for all high school juniors at city public schools in 2017.
