Korean man shot and killed in Los Alamitos, neighbor wanted for questioning
By Kim Hyung-jae, Bae Gun-chan
A 39-year-old Korean man was shot and killed outside his apartment Sunday afternoon in Los Alamitos, California.
Police are now looking for his neighbor, Eleazar Vargas, 41, who is suspected of involvement in the shooting.
According to police, Sangju Sung was on his way home from Sa-Rang Church in Anaheim when he was killed near Catalina and Pine streets. Police found him at about 5:05 p.m with multiple gun shot wounds.
He leaves behind a wife and two children, a 3-year-old and a 6-year-old.
One witness, Susan Mason, 62, said she heard five gunshots before a pause and then four more.
Lee, a friend of Sung’s, said Sung had texted him about Vargas’s menacing demeanor. Sung’s wife received a text message prior to the shooting, in which Sung said Vargas starting trouble again.
The two had been involved in an unknown dispute leading up to the incident, according to police.
“Vargas would curse at Sung for making eye contact and punch Sung’s car door with his fist,” Lee said.
Sung and his family moved to Los Alamitos two years ago.
Jim Pilkenton, a neighbor, said he saw Sung walking home and heard gunshots after.
Pilkenton said although Sung was a quiet, nice guy, Vargas was known to cause trouble around the neighborhood and ignore neighbors’ greetings.
“[Vargas] was very unstable,” Pilkenton told ABC7. “He’s a ticking time bomb. I feel so bad.”
A church source said Sung’s family is currently staying at the home of a church friend.
“Sung’s parents have heard the news and are on their way from Korea,” the source said.
Police are looking for witnesses and for Vargas’s whereabouts. Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to call them at (562)431-2255 ext. 426 or Orange County Crime Stoppers at (855) 847-6227.
