A hurricane is never good news. But that changes when it’s the strongest storm ever recorded in the western hemisphere, and everyone affected by it survived.

Hurricane Patricia raged through the Pacific Ocean and onto Mexico with 165 mile per hour winds. Due to proper planning and some luck, only buildings sustained any real damage.

As the storm approached land, alarms and loudspeakers blared warnings to all those neighborhoods that would soon be in its path. The timing of the warnings allowed tens of thousands of people to evacuate and move to safer areas.

With over 1,200 shelters set up, the problem of overcapacity or bottle necking never really became an issue.

The last time a hurricane hit the country was back in 2013 when over 150 deaths were counted, and the government came under fire for its handling of the natural disaster.
