Super Tuesday! 8 Korean American candidates win in NJ election
By The Korea Times New York staff
The New Jersey Korean American community saw a handful of victories last night as the general assembly election came to a close.
Susan Shin Angulo, of Camden County, became the first-ever Asian American woman to win a freeholder (county legislator) seat.
Four city council candidates around the state — Lee Jong-chul (D) of Palisades Park, Dennis Shim (D) of Ridgefield, Mark M. Park (R) of Englewood Cliffs and Jenny Chung (D) of Closter — nabbed seats.
Notably, Chung’s win pointed to a shift in Closter, which had not had a Democratic candidate for 10 years. She won 26.27 percent of votes.
Education board candidates Esther Han Silver of Fort Lee, Lee Sung-min of Closter, and Steve Yang of Ridgefield, each won Tuesday.
Wonkyu Rim, a Republican who had thrown in his name for the District 27 seat in the state assembly, was defeated as he came in third at the polls with 21 percent.
Others who lost the race were Ellen Park (D) for Englewood Cliffs city council; Margaret Ahn (R) for Fort Lee City Council; and Maria Kim, for regional board of education.
