Thousands to make 50 tons of kimchi at Seoul Plaza
Some 6,000 people will fill the streets of Gwanghwamun, downtown Seoul, this weekend for a kimchi-making festival.
The Seoul Kimchi Festival, in its second year, started last year to commemorate kimjang, the collective practice of making kimchi, receiving a UNESCO heritage listing.
The festival begins at 2 p.m. Friday at Seoul Plaza, in front of Seoul City Hall.
About 6,000 people, including 2,500 foreigners, will make a total of 50 tons of kimchi on Friday and Saturday.
Participants can take the kimchi home, but most of it will be donated to the Korea Association of Social Workers.
On Sunday, Seoul Plaza will be transformed into a cabbage field. Visitors can participate in a game to pick the cabbages.
There also will be kimchi tasting booths featuring the pickled cabbage from provinces across the country.
