LA County urges elder abuse victims to call for help
By The Korea Times Los Angeles staff
A seminar on elder abuse prevention was held Saturday inside a Los Angeles Korean church.
The Korean Prosecutors Association, the Los Angeles Police Department and Adult Protective Services oversaw the event.
According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, about 2.5 million seniors each year suffer from abuse or negligence, with 600,000 in California.
In September this year, Los Angeles County received 4,064 reports on elder abuse, according to APS.
Elder abuse pertains not just to physical and verbal abuse but also to mental abuse, scams, neglect and financial deprivation.
Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney Tony Cho, of the Elder Abuse unit, urged seniors who have been victimized to call for help.
The Olympic Division of the LAPD operates a Korean-language call service for seniors in the Koreatown area, and provides Korean volunteers as needed, said Officer Henry Choi.
According to the Elder Abuse unit, the county provides a range of services to seniors, including law and financial consultation.
