Super Junior’s Choi Si-won named special rep of UNICEF Korean Committee

SEOUL (Yonhap) — Choi Si-won of the South Korean boy band Super Junior has been named one of the special representatives of the Korean Committee for the U.N.’s children agency, his management agency announced Tuesday.

Choi was chosen for his active support of various UNICEF campaigns since 2010, from AIDS prevention to helping young victims of the April earthquake in Nepal, S.M. Entertainment said.

With the appointment, Choi joins the ranks of other top-rated South Korean actors, including Won Bin, Gong Yoo, Lee Bo-young and Kim Hye-soo, who also represent the committee.

“I’m extremely happy and honored to be named one of the special representatives,” Choi was quoted as saying by his agency. “I want to share this good will with children around the world and help make this world a better place for all children.”

Choi will receive the official certificate of appointment at a ceremony at the committee’s office on Thursday, the agency said.

Choi recently became the first South Korean to reach 5 million Twitter followers as his popularity soared even higher after appearing in the TV drama “She was pretty” as an ultra-cool reporter who falls in love with the heroine played by Hwang Jung-eum.

Meanwhile, S.M. said it will sign a corporate social responsibility contract with the committee on Thursday, under which it will support “Schools for Asia,” a UNICEF campaign that strives to educate children in 11 countries to realize their dream in a music career.
