Voter registration for overseas Koreans, which opened Nov. 15 for the April legislative election, have failed to hit 1 percent among the eligible population across the globe.

According to Korea’s National Election Commission, 11,467 Korean nationals out of the estimated 1.98 million worldwide — or about 0.6 percent — had registered to vote.

Just over 2,890 Koreans in America, including 495 in the New York area, 418 in Los Angeles, 405 in San Francisco and 338 in Chicago, had participated as of Wednesday.

The Shanghai diplomatic office had the highest number, at 869, followed by the Tokyo embassy, at 686.

Overseas voting was made available by the South Korean government for the first time in 2012. For the presidential election that year, only 5 percent of eligible voters cast their ballots.

Last week, a group of Korean American organizations in Los Angeles gathered to begin a campaign to promote registration among locals.

Registration ends Feb. 13. Overseas Koreans may register through three methods: online, in person at the nearest diplomatic office, or via mail.
