ABC’s ‘Fresh Off The Boat’ stumbles before premiere with questionable tweet
With less than a week before the series premiere of ABC’s much anticipated Asian American family sitcom “Fresh Off The Boat,” the show’s official Twitter account posted the promo as seen above on Friday.
A public backlash quickly ensued on Twitter beginning with the show’s Executive Producer Eddie Huang — author of the memoir that inspired the series — and Jeff Yang — father of Hudson Yang who plays Eddie’s character on the show.
“We’re all a little #FreshOffTheBoat,” stated the advertisement with a racially diverse set of cartoon characters donning what the ad’s creators thought were “culturally appropriate.”
Huang went on to call those responsible for the ad “morons” and “psychos” while calling the ad “ridiculous and offensive.”
“Wow that ad is awful,” tweeted Yang. ” I mean the idiots who posted this think they’re doing something clever.”
The ad was taken down soon afterward.
This isn’t the first time Huang voiced his displeasure with the show’s direction.
In the January issue of New York Magazine, he authored a long essay voicing criticisms aimed towards the show’s direction.
Here is a snapshot of Huang’s and Yang’s twitter conversation:
