Ban Ki-moon calls for world free of nuclear weapons

As U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon gears up for a potential meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, he hopes to spread a grander vision of a world free of nuclear weapons.

“Now is the time to intensify our efforts to rid the world of these most destructive weapons,” he stated during a South Korea-U.N. joint video conference.

Talking points from Monday included the communist country’s nuclear weapons development program and the deal struck among Iran and a handful of world powers regarding the same topic.

The biggest priority for Ban right now involves taking the necessary steps to secure a face-to-face conversation with Kim Jong-un.

The South Korean representative hopes to bring up some of sensitive issues including nuclear disarmament and peace between the two Koreas.

Historically, only two of the eight Secretary General’s have ever visited the country — most recently by Boutros Boutros-Ghali in 1993 and also by Kurt Waldheim back in 1979. Both visited the country’s leader at the time, Kim Il-sung.
