Big Bang, EXO win big at 2015 MAMA
Big Bang and EXO won top honors at 2015 MAMA, one of K-pop’s largest music award ceremonies, held this year in Hong Kong’s Asia World-Expo Arena Wednesday.
While Big Bang picked up the grand prizes for Best Song and Best Artist, EXO snagged Best Album of the Year.
The boy band from SM Entertainment also picked up Best Style, the Global Fans’ Choice Award and Best Male Group.
“We’re so grateful to have received Best Album of the Year three years in a row,” EXO said upon receiving the trophy. “We think there is no big or small when it comes to awards. We think the value of this award depends on how we progress from here on out. We’ll work hard to become the EXO that are real artists, and who can make this award into one with greater value.”
Big Bang, which will meet its 10th debut anniversary next year, thanked fans for the two grand honors, as well as two others for Best Music Video and Worldwide Favorite Artist.
“We were able to receive Best Artist thanks to the work of many. We will try our best to become artists who match the title,” they said.
Other big winners included Girls’ Generation leader and vocalist Taeyeon, who won Best Female Artist for her first solo album released earlier this year, and JYP head Park Jin-young, who won both Best Producer and Best Male Artist. His addictive “Who’s Your Mama?” swept charts upon its unveiling in April.
Red Velvet and SHINee each own the Best Female/Male Performance award. Girls’ Generation took home the trophy for Best Female Group.
Best rookie awards went to iKon and Twice.
The night also marked the return of 2ne1 member Park Bom to the public for the first time since a drug scandal hit headlines in June last year. The group followed a solo performance by band frontgirl CL by singing “Fire” and “I Am The Best.”
MAMA, which is now in its seventh year, is put on by Mnet.
