BMW champ An says he took up golf because he’s not athletic enough for ping-pong
South Korea’s An Byeong-hun made waves after he won the BMW Championship to climb up the world rankings as well as President Cup standings.
But his life could have turned out much differently if he followed in the footsteps of his parents who both happened to be medalists at the 1988 Olympics.
The decision to pick up golf was based on an unexpected reason.
“I took up golf because I’m not athletic enough for table tennis – I’m too slow and too big – but my parents are my role models,” he told ESPN after his most recent win.
The 23-year old hopes to bring South Korean men into golfing headlines more often just like the country’s female counterparts have been doing.
“With [South Koreans] doing so well on the ladies tour, it’s about time us men step up our game!” he said.
