Brown University student from S. Korea dies after jumping off campus building
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Brown University graduate student from South Korea has died after jumping from the 12th floor of a campus building.
Police officials tell the Providence Journal that the 25-year-old student’s death Tuesday afternoon was a suicide. University spokesman Mark Nickel says the student plunged from the Sciences Library building.
Brown President Christina Paxson identified him in a statement on the university’s website as Hyoun Ju Sohn, a first-year physics doctoral student from South Korea. She said the university is “deeply saddened” by his death.
Paxson said Sohn had “glowing evaluations” as a teaching assistant at Brown. She said he graduated in 2013 from Columbia University.
A vigil was held Tuesday night outside the campus center, and smaller meetings were held for students and faculty. Paxson said counseling will be available.
