CGV 4DX theaters draw record 20 mln viewers across the world this year
SEOUL, Nov. 5 (Yonhap) — The number of annual admissions to 4DX theaters worldwide has surpassed 20 million for the first time since the new immersive cinema system was introduced in 2009, the theaters’ operator said Monday.
CJ 4DPLEX, a subsidiary of South Korea’s largest cinema chain, CJ CGV, said that this year’s cumulative admissions and box office from its 571 4DX theaters in 59 countries was 20 million and US$250 million as of Saturday, surpassing last year’s figures of 19 million viewers and box office sales of $233 million.
CGV attributed the increase to the remarkable growth of 4DX markets in Japan, China, South Korea, France, Mexico, Britain and the United States. The seven countries took up about 65 percent of the entire 4DX box office across the world with the largest gains coming from Japan, with 55 4DX theaters.
“We’ll do our best to increase to 600 the total number of 4DX theaters worldwide and $300 million box office sales by the end of this year,” company CEO Kim Jong-yeol said.
