Chicago Korean association elects first female president

Chicago’s Korean American community has elected its first female leader.
Jin Ahn-soon won the race for the presidential seat of the Korean American Association of Chicago Sunday with 56.3 percent of votes over her opponent, Kim Hak-dong, who received 43.1 percent.
A reported 5,440 community members voted in the election.
Jin becomes the 32nd president of the association, which was founded in 1962.
“Currently, there is a lot of work to be done in finding cooperation within the Chicago Korean American community,” Jin said. “We plan on programming a variety of events and inviting opinions to help bring about harmony.”
A majority of voters were comprised of those in their 50s (23 percent), 60s (26 percent) and 70s (23 percent), while only 1 percent and 4 percent of those in their teens and 20s, respectively, participated.
According to the association, the Korean population numbers at about 150,000 in the city and in surrounding areas.
