China creates first hydrogen-powered tram, only emission is water

China’s dense urban areas have often been criticized for pollution and general disregard for the environment, but thanks to the invention of the world’s first hydrogen-powered tram, the country is taking a step towards changing that perception.

The new environmentally-conscious form of transportation only emits water as a byproduct meaning that operating the tram won’t be damaging to the atmosphere.

Its current design allows for more than 60 miles of travel while going almost 45 miles per hour on just one tank of hydrogen. Additionally, each tram can carry up to 380 passengers at once.

“The average distance of tramcar lines in China is about 15 kilometers (9.3 miles), which means one refill for our tram is enough for three round trips,” Liang Jianying, chief engineer of the Sifang Company, told the Xinhua news agency.

The hydrogen tank only takes approximately three minutes to refill and the cost to run it is relatively cheap he said.

The Sifang Company was responsible for gathering local scientists and research institutes to accomplish this technological breakthrough.

The first productions of the tram have just concluded and will be employed soon within the country.
