Community leaders get together to ring Korean Bell of Friendship
San Pedro’s Korean Bell of Friendship rang 13 times Saturday morning in honor of the 13 original states and to celebrate U.S.-Korean friendship.
In an event organized by the bell preservation committee and the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, the Independence Day program was attended by about 200.
Following a show of traditional Korean performances, a group of community leaders — newly elected City Councilman David Ryu, Councilman Joe Buscaino, Congresswoman Janice Hahn, Senator Isadore Hall and Korean Consul General Kim Hyun-myung — rang the bell together.
Three additional rings, for American prosperity, for Korean reunification and for world peace, followed.
Ryu said he would work hard by remembering the sacrifices of first-generation Korean immigrants, who strove to attain the American dream.
