Danny Lee continues strong play, leads WGC-Bridgestone Invitational
By Brian Han
A week before the final major of the season, Danny Lee is continuing his hot streak. The WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio is the 25-year-old’s 30th tournament of the year and he’s showing no signs of fatigue.
Lee came out firing on Thursday by birdieing three of his first four holes, which included draining a 23-foot putt on his opening hole and stiffing his approach on the second.
The Korean New Zealander finished with a field-leading 5-under 65 with seven birdies and two bogeys, both of which came on his first nine on par 3 tee shots.
Lee pulled his tee shots on holes 12 and 15, and was not able to convert his sand save opportunities despite the rest of his game being sharp.
His short stick was especially effective on his second nine where two of three of his birdies came from putts just under 30 feet.
Graeme McDowell and Jim Furyk are a stroke behind Lee.
The course was playing particularly difficult as only 21 of 77 players shot under-par.
