Danny Lee shoots 2-over, Furyk leads by 4 at WGC-Bridgestone
By Brian Han
Danny Lee couldn’t hold the lead on Friday after shooting a 2-over 74 to bring his total to 3-under for the tournament. He is currently tied for fifth place
The 25-year-old Korean New Zealander struck the ball better than most of the field, but had problems with his putter on Firestone Country Club’s slick surfaces.
The par-5 second summed up his strengths and weaknesses for the day. After a well-placed drive to the left side of the fairway, Lee hit the green in two but left himself with a lengthy 79-footer. He then putt his ball off the green and couldn’t secure the up-and-down resulting in a bogey.
Despite a slow finish, Lee was able to snag two birdies on the final two holes to end on a high note.
Veteran Jim Furyk wasn’t phased by the course conditions and matched his first round 4-under 66 for an 8-under total and a four-stroke lead over Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson.
Furyk didn’t post a low score with his signature precision though. In fact he only hit 40 percent of the fairways, but his iron play was enough to put him in position for relatively easy birdies. The three he made on his front nine had an average distance of just under five feet to the hole.
