Fashion boom hits North Korea
By The Korea Times Seoul staff
Fashion knows no borders, including North Korean ones.
“Imitation” handbags and fashion wear from Prada and Dior are enjoying new popularity among North Korean women.
Radio Free Asia reported recently that an article, “The rise of fashion in North Korea,” was published in “Dazed & Confused” by a freelancer named Lu-Hai Liang.
Liang posted pictures of young North Korean women wearing designer clothes and carrying designer handbags. This sudden boom in fashion is speculated to be the result of a desire to imitate Ri Sol Ju, the wife of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
But the fashion boom comes as a surprise to many because North Korea has been enforcing a strict sartorial limit until now.
The fake handbags and fashion wear seem to be imported from China.
